My truck doesn’t normally ride like an ox cart due to its stubby wheelbase, the front shocks were just completely toast.

Once I got them off the truck (why can’t all shocks be this easy to change???) if you compressed them down they didn’t rebound back at all. I was purely on springs.

Kinja'd!!!

I got Monroe shocks (yeah yeah I know Monroe sux yadda yadda) which are an obnoxious shade of bright yellow. They do what they need to and match the rears that the previous owners changed not long before I bought it. The truck rides so much better now. Well worth the money spent.

The MJ needs new shocks too. Also new springs. Frankly new everything in the suspension, tbh. Most of it looks to be 522,000km-original stuff. But it still doesn’t ride anywhere near what I’d call an ox-cart. And the roads out here are less than stellar.

How do you compress your springs? Do you rent that big-ass clamp thing?

I’m a way off from having to do a suspension overhaul (72,000 mile truck ftw) but I had to do one on the M3 and it kinda sucked.

It wasn’t really an ox cart, but having new shocks on the back and worn ones up front lead to a weird feeling ride.

No spring compressor needed for these. The spring wedges between the control arms and the shock just slides in the middle of it. On my M3 though I had to buy a spring compressor set from harbor freight to do the front struts.

Very much so. Two bolts and a nut and it just falls out.

The front shock mounts on S10s are probably the best designed part of the whole truck. Hilariously easy to change. Now if only they’d managed to stop the 4x4s from devouring ball joints like there’s no tomorrow.

GM IFS is quite nice for shock replacement. Speaking of which, I have to do that on mine.

Of course, the live axle rear is even easier.
